The people of Krong No, Daklak, Viet Nam are Mountain ethnic groups, whose livelihood is based on shifting cultivation. They have very diverse crop systems that include upland rice. The research focus is species conservation and improving diversity in order to preserve agricultural biodiversity on the farm and alleviate hunger and poverty.

The Asian Farmers’ Association for Sustainable Development and the Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy have produced a new report documenting successful approaches in three countries: Cambodia, Philippines, Indonesia. The three case studies presented in this report represent successful approaches, both in terms of the techniques they have applied, and because of the active involvement of farmers’ organizations in changing the policies needed to ensure their success.

This report highlights the extent to which the small farmers were able to adapt to the impacts of climate change variations by establishing analog forests in their land holdings.

Agroecology best practices

The case of two farmers introduced to the idea of home garden, currently using their land creatively to produce a diversity of fruits and vegetables, and tea.

This case study demonstrates that there are humane and economically viable alternatives to intensive egg production aimed at the urban market. It shows a sustainable poultry model suited to improving the livelihoods and nutrition of poor rural households that is simultaneously better for animal welfare and less reliant on buying in feed from external providers.

This paper describes key principles and approaches of sustainable agriculture, particularly at local community level, as a key alternative to GM crops and industrial agriculture systems. This is followed by an account of the successes of sustainable agri-culture practices in some parts of developing countries, illustrated by three case studies.
